Jane Gallagher's Diary: Coming of Age Semester Project

Hi ladies and gents:,)

I wanted to share my semester project with you guys.
It's written in Jane Gallagher's perspective as an interpretation of the football game night (because we were only given Holden's perspective through Catcher in the Rye). I took the information given about her in the novel and created a character that has been through a lot of what you might not know she went through.

Hope you enjoy. I love Jane and I hope this piece will help you to, too.

  1. I love this diary entry! It really shows the similarities between Holden and Jane and also shows Jane more in depth; why she couldn't keep in touch with Holden, why she didn't talk about him. She, like him, doesn't really like the social order that's in place but kind of adheres to it just enough to fit in so that she can stay afloat in her society, which I find really interesting and relatable. Amazing job!

  2. This is so cute Grace! I love the way you developed Jane's character, and described the backstory of why the game of chess was so important for her. I like all the slang you put into it too. This story really makes me wish Jane and Holden had been able to meet up again!

  3. This is amazing! The tone of voice is incredible, I can definitely tell that Jane is from a different time period. I also love how she complains about phoniness in her own way, just like Holden. You convinced me through this diary entry that she and Holden are MEANT for each other. I'd like to believe that they find their way back to each other one day.

  4. I got to read most of this for peer review but I'm so glad I finally got to finish it! I love the tone of the letter and how you chose to use 1950s slang words. Like Emma said above, it was really cool to find places in the text where Jane sounds just like Holden. It's like they're somehow connected and maybe it's a sign that they're destined to meet again one day.
